Major League Baseball (MLB) is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world and is the oldest professional sports league. The baseball league currently has 30 teams competing in it of which 15 are in the National League and the other 15 in the American League. 29 of the 30 teams are based in the United States while one team is from Canada. MLB is only second to the National Football League when it comes to revenue amongst all professional sports leagues in the world. Every team will play 162 games during a season and five teams each from the National League and American League make it to the post-season.
The kind of uniform worn by a person involved in a baseball game is indicative of his role in the game. Besides players, some non-playing personnel like coaches and field managers also wear a certain type of uniform. Uniforms worn for home games will have the name of the team on the front and those worn for away games will show the team's location.
Pitchers started to dominate the League towards the end of the 1960s. The year 1968 was thus called "The year of the pitcher." Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox who had a batting average of .301 won the batting title in the American League that year. Elite pitchers like Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers and Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals were dominating most of the matches they played. Thus arose the need to even things out by cancelling the advantage pitchers had over batters. Consequently, the MLB Playing Rules committee reduced the strike zone to top of knees to armpits which was earlier from knees to shoulders. The pitcher's mound was also lowered to 10 inches from 15 inches.
